Programmes are being geared up to make use of the skills and
talents in the local community. These local projects will give you
and your school the opportunity to shine. This is a great
opportunity to discover and embrace different cultures with the
emphasis on learning and understanding. The International
Children's Games will allow schools and the local community to
establish links with other cities. The education programme is
encompassing many themes and with your help will be a great
success.
Language
Would your students like to become Language Ambassadors? If they
are 16 or over then they can volunteer to become attached to a city
group and team. If they are under 16 then they and you can offer
your school as a potential visit from the teams. Your pupils and
students can demonstrate their language skills and maybe welcome a
team from their own country/city.
Environment
On Saturday February 19th at 10.30 the Lord Mayor of Coventry is
planting the first tree in the new Coundon Woodland, which is
linked to the Games. Your pupils and their families would be
welcome to attend this event and plant trees. There will be many
ways in which Coventry children can have a lasting connection with
the woodland. The woodland will have trees from the five
continents.
Art Competition
In the lead up to the summers games we are running two art
competitions. One is for primary and one is for secondary schools.
Anthony Dix is assisting me to design the competition criteria and
a letter will go to Art co-ordinators in February.
Adopt a City
Your school and pupils will have the opportunity to make a link
with one or more of the cities that will be attending the Games in
July. Your children might want to learn more about the culture,
religion, geography and history and exchange emails and photos.
Sport
Ken Adamson and the School Sports Co-ordinators are already
working on plans to celebrate PE and sport from 27th June - 15th
July. They will be working closely with The Woodlands and Lyng Hall
as our two sports colleges - Congratulations to Lyng Hall on their
recent successful designation.
Volunteering
Would your 6th form students (age 16 or over) like to volunteer
for the period of the Games? There are a variety of positions
available, including Team Host, VIP support, Sports Team, Marketing
Events Staff etc. The programme is being co-ordinated by Vince
Mayne, Director of Sport, Coventry University. If your students
have queries please ask them to contact Alison Toner. If they want
an information pack please contact
